Abstract

The Mount Saint Vincent University Department of Business and Tourism offers an extracurricular engagement program for students known as the Learning Passport program, which has been offered since 2009. This analysis focused on 54 extracurricular activities students could select to participate in during the academic year (Fall 2022 and Winter 2023). Research has linked managerial competencies to curriculum in business schools from both the employers’ and educators’ perspectives. The goal of this research was to evaluate the MSVU LP program based on its ability to introduce students to managerial competencies relevant to business administration, hospitality management, and tourism education. Drawing on a qualitative iterative and interactive research process, researchers found that the program was strongest in delivering technical and self-management competencies, followed by strategic management and client and partnering management competencies. The program was less effective in engaging students with leadership and teamwork competencies.
